Let’s study kanji 肺 together!

今日の漢字は『肺』にしましょう。

肺臓 - はいぞう lungs

肺炎 - はいえん pneumonia

肺癌 - はいがん lung cancer

肺移植 - はいいしょく lung transplant

P.S. Did you know that many kanji for body parts, especially those denoting the internal organs, contain the character ⺝on their left-hand side?

What appears to be a half-sized kanji meaning ‘moon’ is in fact… a meat radical . This variation is called にくづき, or the ‘meat moon’.

肉 > ⺼ > ⺝

How to distinguish the moon from the meat? (tricky question! )

にくづき is almost exclusively on the left side of the character, so-called へん(偏), whereas the moon radical つき is most often found in つくり(旁)position.
