What appears to be a half-sized kanji meaning ‘moon’ is in fact… a meat radical 肉. This variation is called にくづき, or the ‘meat moon’.
肉 > ⺼ > ⺝
How to distinguish the moon from the meat? (tricky question! )
にくづき is almost exclusively on the left side of the character, so-called へん(偏), whereas the moon radical つき is most often found in つくり(旁)position.
