P.S. Momijigari 紅葉狩り, a 4-minute long recording of a fragment of a kabuki play of the same title, is widely considered to be Japan’s first silent movie. It was recorded in 1899, and the director Tsunekichi Shibata 柴田 常吉 promised the lead onnagata that the film wouldn’t be screened until after the actor’s death.

When an illness prevented the actor from performing onstage in 1903, he changed his mind and decided to make up for his absence by showing the recording. The film became an instant hit, and screenings lasted for over a month due to popular demand!

Watch it yourself and feel like a member of the Osaka audience at the dawn of the twentieth century!
