Let’s learn Japanese kanji 焦!

今回の漢字は『焦』にしましょう!

(が)焦げる - こげる get burnt; to scorch; to get singed

(を)焦がす - こがす to burn something; to char sth

恋い焦がれる - こいこがれる to be ardently in love; to burn with passion for; to yearn for

焦がれ死ぬ - こがれしぬ to die of love; to be consumed by flames of love

焦土と化する - しょうどとかする reduced to ashes; burn to the ground

(ご飯の)お焦げ - (ごはんの)おこげ crisp, slightly burnt rice at the bottom of the pot; scorched rice

焦り - あせり impatience, anxiousness; a frantic haste

焦る - あせる to be hasty; to act hastily, to be in a hurry

焦慮 - しょうりょ impatience; worry, anxiety, trouble

焦げ臭い - こげくさい burnt smell

黒焦げの死体 - くろこげのしたい charred bodies

e.g. 焦らなくていい。Don’t be in such a hurry / Take your time about it./ Don’t panic.

P.S. Did you know that the top part of this character, 隹, is known as the short-tail bird radical, while the bottom part is a variant of the fire radical?

The bird radical can be found in many kanji - although, funnily enough, not in the kanji 鳥 meaning bird… 😅 (which, coincidentally, is also a radical)
